What is Volunteer Vacations all about?Hotel Backpackers together with Casa Guatemala are offering a special "Volunteer vacations" experience. You can now combine your dream of visiting this exotic country with your desire to help out those in need. Casa Guatemala is an orphanage on the Rio Dulce that is school and
home to around 250 children. The orphanage is funded by generous
donations from the public and volunteers
We are now offering short term volunteer opportunities to travellers who are looking to make a difference. Volunteer Vacations allows you to get involved with the projects, and to help out at the orphanage whilst still being flexible with your vacation time. You can spend your days working with the other volunteers and children at the orphanage, and the nights relaxing at the hotel.
If the idea of contributing to the quality of life of children in
our orphanage appeals to you, but you do not have the 4 months (minimum)
that is normally needed to volunteer, or if you are not yet 24, you
can sign up for this program which works in blocks of one week.
You can sign up for as many
as you like.
Total cost per week is U.S. $232 = € 200.00 (approx.). Drinks are not included in the package. It is also possible to stay in a private room for an additional $10 per day You can stay for as many weeks as you like. If you come in a large group then it is necessary for you to pay for the extra fuel, for transport to the orphanage, as we will have to provide an additional boat. The cost for a private lancha is $5 per person. If we are transporting materials to the orphanage then you may ride in the cargo boat for free. We can also provide the following service, to make getting here slightly easier: To pick you up at the airport, place you in the second floor of the house where Casa Guatemala has its offices in the city, this house is near to the American Embassy, it is a safe area: 5 Avenida 7-22 Zona 10. The second floor of the house is equipped with a stove, refrigerator, and a washing machine. It also has an internet line where you can hook your laptop. Coffee, tea, milk, cereal, bread, jam and butter are available for your breakfast. The following day, we will drive you to the bus station where you can take a bus across to Rio Dulce. The boat leaves from the hotel around 0700 each morning and the scenic ride takes about 20 minutes. You can if you prefer, have breakfast when you arrive at Casa Guatemala in the dining room (breakfast is served until 8:30 AM). You may be lucky and eat together with some volunteers or the staff.
There is no obligation. After you have seen this paradise you can enjoy your stay in the hotel and sightsee, read a book, socialize, be around people with similar interests and passions, who share your adventurous spirit of travel with new people. You are free to spend your days as you see best. Be happy and relax.
We are grateful for your visit and just by staying at the Backpackers Hotel you are making a contribution that helps to feed the children at the orphanage.
The boat returns to Hotel Backpackers between 4 and 5pm and you are free to order your evening meal whenever you like until, 10 PM when the kitchen closes. You have all this time to yourself to think about your day, enjoy the view from the deck of the hotel. Feel good doing something different from just traveling.
The picture on the left shows the Rucksack - the bar at the Hotel where you can relax and have a wonderful time. After a hard working day in the orphanage, you deserve to have a nice cool Guatemalan beer, and why not? Dance and enjoy the Latin American music. It is certain that you will meet people and make connections while being challenged and learning new skills.
What are your dreams? Dedicate part of your holidays to do something for other people and to use your skills for helping people and trying to make a difference in the world. You must agree that the care of children is everyone's
responsibility.
Security while you vacation
If you feel unsure about traveling through Guatemala, we can arrange to pick you up at the airport, put you up in a hotel in the city, put you on the bus to Rio Dulce and make sure you arrive at Backpackers Hotel.
If you are a group, we can make the arrangements to get a van and take you to Rio Dulce with a police escort on the road.
You will be able to help others. You have been blessed in your own life. It's time for you to give some of your time and some of your love to those children who need it. You have the possibility to travel and see new things, so this would be a great opportunity for you to help others and experience a new culture at the same time. You can share your gifts and talents with the children at Casa Guatemala.
